The Tender Land – Aaron Copland The Tender Land, set in the rural American 1930s heartland—perhaps on Route 66, The Mother Road, not too far from here—tells the intimate story of a young woman and her family at the moment of decision. Laurie, about to graduate, knows her family is proud of her and hopeful, but she feels strange about her place in the world—at once drawn to familiar traditions and beckoned by the wide unknown. Enter strangers. Enter unexpected, tender love. And enter, necessarily, loss and letting go. This coming-of-age tale is full of fun, dancing, thanksgiving, and becoming. Starring internationally-acclaimed tenor, Ric Furman, this masterful “rescue opera” tells the redemptive story of a woman’s heroic journey to save her husband from prison after being wrongfully detained by a political rival. This Springfield-area Premiere features the famous “Prisoner’s Chorus” and Beethoven’s typical lush, passionate music which was written at a time when he was experiencing his own Deafness and is now seen as a daring, Romantic Period tale of the composer’s own triumph over oppression.
