On Saturday, September 8, 2018 Start The Conversation will kick-off an all-day event intended to promote awareness, education, and prevention of youth suicide. This event will unite leaders in faith-based fields and Springfield area youth with mental health professionals in order to achieve a day of learning and fun.

o Youth Leader/Adult targeted events, no ticket required:

§ 1:00 pm: Free hour-long education seminar, “Why People Die by Suicide and What Can We Do About It?” led by Dr. Paul Thomlinson, Executive Director of Research at Compass Health Network. This session will provide youth leaders with the tools necessary to recognize and address symptoms of suicide. No registration or ticket required to attend this seminar.

§ 2:00 pm: Free showing of Suicide: The Ripple Effect, a 90-minute award-winning documentary that focuses on the devastating effects of suicide and the remarkable positive ripple effects of advocacy, inspiration, and hope that are helping people stay alive. Based on the story of Kevin Hines, who attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge, this film addresses the subject of suicide with a hopeful, intriguing, and entertaining approach that highlights the work being done by individuals who have been directly impacted by suicide.

o Teen/Youth targeted events requiring free ticket:

§ 4:30 pm-6:30 pm: A free Chicago-style hot dog meal prepared by Touch Restaurant will be served in the Gallery at the Gillioz Theater.Local band, Kaizen, will perform a pre-show in the theater during this time.

§ 7:00 pm: A free concert featuring three local bands: Fishing for Saturday, a group of young rock musicians studying music at Pellegrino’s School of Music and Art; Innuendo, a group of musicians playing rock covers and original material; and Papa Green Shoes, a group rooted in modern electric blues with touches of soul and rock. Throughout the concert, educational slides with resources for at-risk individuals will be shown. Each attendee will also receive a free Start the Conversation t-shirt.

§ No entry to evening events will be allowed without a free valid ticket issued by the Gillioz Theatre.

§ Safety screening measures will be in place. Large bags and backpacks will not be allowed in the theater. Other bags or items may be searched at the discretion of the Security staff.
